reply to FLO

Hi FLORENCE!!

how're u ??
spring's here!! must be SO beautiful!!

jealous =p
.
.
.
.
.
actually i read "mere Christianity"..though i did not finish it..stopped somewhere in the middle though...
i also read "The Case for a Creator" by Lee Strobel.(a gift from Daphne!!) ...this book was better, stopped somewhere near the end(Daphne u should be happy to hear that)..
as well as "The Purpose Driven Life" by Rick Warren..this book fared the worst..couldn't go pass the 3rd chapter i think (coz i din have time lar..only held the book for one day) =p

quote Florence:
"God isn't bad. If He was, I wouldn't be typing this... He'd probably zapped me and sent me to hell for all my sins if He were bad, but I'm still here!"

yeah but the problem is, if He were to zap u then none of us will be here..
.
.
.
lol...but actually..
u could argue it both ways..
God is bad..By not punishing the murderers who have killed good ppl..by not zapping them...by letting innocent, good ppl get killed, while the murderers get away scot-free...God has actually proven himself to be their accomplice..

since both ways are logical,
I could say that God doesn't care most of the time..maybe like us, He can't multitask that well, or He might just be lazy...which is why like us, he created a set of laws...physical rules, the laws of nature, the laws of physics..(much like how we created AI - by putting in a set of laws, logics...)
and let it run on auto-pilot..

maybe he really created life..
but he invented evolution too so that life itself can run on auto-pilot..

maybe 2000 years earlier..
He really intervened in our world..but then He got busy left us to 自身自灭
maybe now he's intervening in another world..trying to create another life...we might be like the obsolete computers that we just dump into the storeroom..
maybe to Him..
we're like probably 486, and now he's creating a dual-core...

maybe..just maybe..

quoting rachel..
但到最后还是只有或许。。。
.
.
.
.
so i guess i better go back to my work =p
at least thats more productive =p
.
.
.
.
.
btw,

thinking about "what ifs" is fun...
which is probably y i'm so uncertain about my life, my future...unlike you, florence.

oh and florence..i'm just daydreaming out loud..
so if u find it fun to ramble back..
or u find it fun to rebutt me..feel free!!
and thanks for all your long comments
=p

but if u're doing it becoz u feel u have the responsibility to do it since u're a Christian..
then well....i'm sorry =<

p.s Do u think that I can go down to hell and make it a better place??

coz come to think of it, we could turn a desert into Las Vegas, eventually we could even turn Moon, or Mars into Disneyland..
how come we can't turn Hell into a livable place?? =p
has anyone thought of this question??
or will our souls lose the ability to think and act rationally when we die??

i'm answering cuz ur argument is flawed =)

"God is bad..By not punishing the murderers who have killed good ppl..by not zapping them...by letting innocent, good ppl get killed, while the murderers get away scot-free...God has actually proven himself to be their accomplice.."

Innocent, good ppl + murderers, liars, fornicators.. wtv la.. all have done wrong things one way or the other, so God chose to punish all of us by sending all of us to hell, cuz He is good and we suck. But he's not just the normal type of good. He's so super duper ultra good that He sent his son to die for our sins, so that we who suck can still go to heaven. (I don't know what other word to use other than suck LOL)

Quoting again...
"since both ways are logical,
I could say that God doesn't care most of the time..maybe like us, He can't multitask that well, or He might just be lazy...which is why like us, he created a set of laws...physical rules, the laws of nature, the laws of physics..(much like how we created AI - by putting in a set of laws, logics...)

End quote.

God loved and loves us so much that right from the beginning, he always gave us a choice. He had his perfect awesome will for us, but he always let us choose. It's not that he doesn't care, just that he cares too much to force us, so ok lo.. you do your own way.. nvm.. he prepared a backup plan... hence he sent His son to die for you, for us.

the thing about hell i'm not so sure, but the thing is, what makes you think you'll be in control in hell? In ctrl enough to change anyth?

I'm supposed to be studying now, but I chose to grace your blog with my presence. You sek do la k.. =P

You know, sometimes I'm confused....a major emphasis of belief in a higher being is faith, which I take to mean complete belief in something without the need for justification to do so. Really strong faith would even mean a total belief in something in spite of conflicting evidence. So why then are there all these arguments floating around for the existence of God? God's existence shouldn't be explained by an appeal to reason, God should exist merely because I believe in Him...ie I have faith...so actually all the religious apologists seem to me to have some sorta internal conflict of logic...ie a belief in God is a thing of faith, yet faith shouldn't need reason to back it up...personally I think logic shouldn't be applied to things such as Gods or matters of spirituality, institutionalised religion on the other hand is another issue, becasue let's face it, at the core, it's really human politics.

Good point xing ji... hence the Bible says Blessed are those who do not see and yet believe... i confess it's a constant struggle for me.

However, i do believe God, being God, exhibits His existence to us in innumerable ways, and logic is just one of them.

But you hit a chord there, thanks!

I do not deny that logic is a useful tool to be employed in many situations. I am merely expressing my personal opinion that in matters of faith, logic might be inappropriate as a tool to decide whether one should believe in it or not, just as one doesn't use logic to decide if one prefers red or blue etc. My comment was actually critical of people who try to convince others to believe in their religion by logical arguments, when in the same breath they also opine that it is a matter of unquestioning belief. Of course, one could say that it is a manifestation of both, but that's like trying to cut your epistemological cake and eat it too

Haih... You know what, Li Hong?

Some things are better left not understood.

"If God was good why would He let the tsunamis and the earthquakes happen?"

isn't really the question to ask.

Believing that God is good doesn't mean that we won't face troubles on Earth. But it gives us a reassurance that there *is* someone up there with a plan... that's beyond our understanding... and that in the end, He'll see us through those tsunamis and earthquakes.

The more you try to fight the existence of God, the more you will be convinced that God doesn't exist. And the more bitter you will become towards this issue.

So, I suggest, you give it a rest for now. Stop thinking about refuting God, refuting Christianity, Buddhism, whatnots.

And just look around you. At people. At their hearts. At their intentions. At their wants and needs in life.

Life in itself is a miracle, if you'll just stare hard enough.

We understand your struggle Li Hong.

You're a human, who lives in uncertainty. That's why there are so many "maybes" are seen.

I guess it's human nature that we can't find perfect theories no matter what side we stand at, atheists or religious.

As atheists, we question the reliability of faith. As the religious, we question the uncertainty of afterlife and life itself suffered by the atheist.

There is no ending war between the atheists and the religious.

The only way to end this is well, when we all die, we'll know.

:)

haha.As a fellow human being,I'm equally puzzled over the existence of injustice, pain, evil, suffering...

Honestly, I don't know the answers to your questions.

But,

Isn't it possible that there is a god who exists somewhere but he is beyond our level of knowledge at this point?

Isn't it possible that there is a reason/purpose for everything that sometimes is beyond our understanding or that God choses not to reveal to us?

After all, wouldnt it be highly suspicious if someone were to claim that he/she has full knowledge and knows everything-including the way god functions and His modus operative...I mean if god is supposedly our almighty and all powerful creator, than wouldn't it be hardly surprising that sometimes His ways are beyond our realm of understanding?

Also, how are so certain than god is in "auto piliot" mode? How are you so entirely sure that god is not concerned with our well-being?

Anyway, suppose if someone could give you an answer to your questions, would you be convinced that Chrisitinity is true?

Lihong, what are you in search of?
